Tips to Maintain Air Conditioner

With the numerous options and top brands available in the market, choosing the perfect air conditioner that meets your requirements is an easy task. Maintaining the air conditioner and ensuring top performance for years is a little difficult to do. If you take proper care of your AC, then you can extend its life by many years.

When you purchase the product from the dealer, you will receive a warranty on the AC. This warranty will cover certain basic repairs on the air conditioner for a particular period of time. The service center will not charge you a lot for the repairs that come under the warranty. However, if the warranty period expires, then it will become very expensive to make repairs on the appliance.

You can take up an AMC (Annual Maintenance Contract) with the dealer. The AMC gives you an affordable solution to maintaining the AC after the warranty period is over. Even then you will have to spend a lot of money for repairs and maintenance. You can minimize on these repair works if you clean and maintain the cooling appliance at regular intervals.

Here are some basic tips for AC maintenance:

Clean the Vents As the air conditioner works continually for hours together, a lot of dust and dirt gets accumulated on the vents. This dust can hamper the performance of the air conditioner. So, you should regularly clean out the accumulated dust in the vents.

Clean the Filter Another part of the air conditioner that is most exposed to the dust mites is the air filter. Remove the filter and shake out all the accumulated dust and debris. You can also use a cleaning solution authorized for use by the manufacturer.

Clear Obstacles Near the Condenser Unit

The air conditioner has a condenser unit that is usually installed on the outside of your house. The heat generated during the cooling process is emitted through this unit. If there are obstacles, bushes or other things blocking this opening, then the appliance could heat up. It will not only reduce the air conditioner’s performance, but can also become very dangerous.

Clean the Cooling Coils

This will require a little professional help as it will be difficult to remove the outer unit and clean the coils. When the service person comes for the periodic checks, make sure he cleans the coils properly.

Check the Drain Lines

When the AC is working, you will see water dripping from the pipes. This condensed water has to be removed from the cooling appliance, so it doesn’t deposit on any of the metal parts and cause rusting. Regularly check the drain lines to ensure that there is free flow of water.

Check if the Thermostat is Working

The air conditioning unit will have a thermostat that will switch the appliance on and off when it has reached a particular temperature. If this part is faulty, then the appliance will continue to work even after the cooling temperatures are reached. So, the appliance will consume more electricity than required. Save power and enhance your AC’s performance with this small check.
